    Summary

BJ Fogg's behaviour model holds that a behaviour happens when motivation, ability and a prompt converge at the same moment. Because motivation is unreliable, the practical strategy is to make the behaviour so easy that almost no motivation is required, and to anchor it to a prompt that already exists.

    The model: B = MAP

Behaviour occurs when Motivation, Ability and a Prompt coincide. Raising motivation is the least durable lever — it fluctuates daily. Raising ability, by shrinking the behaviour, is stable. Prompts turn intention into action at a specific moment.

    Shrink the behaviour

Fogg's advice is to reduce a behaviour until it takes under thirty seconds and almost no willpower. In money terms, that is not 'save 10% of income' but 'save an amount so small you would not bother cancelling it'.

    Anchor to an existing prompt

New habits attach best to established routines. Payday, a weekly bill or an existing app schedule are reliable anchors; 'when I remember' is not.

    Celebrate to consolidate

Fogg argues that positive emotion immediately after the behaviour is what wires it in. Applied to saving, this is why milestone feedback on a goal matters more than the balance itself.

    Applied to Squirrellling

The platform takes all three levers: ability is maximised by a tiny fixed amount, the prompt is replaced by an automatic schedule, and progress feedback supplies the celebration. Motivation is deliberately left out of the design.

    Key Takeaways

    • Motivation is the weakest lever; ability and prompts are stronger.
    • Shrink the behaviour until it cannot fail.
    • Anchor new habits to routines that already exist.
    • Positive feedback immediately after the action consolidates it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't a tiny habit too tiny to matter?

The size is a starting condition. Fogg's point is that consistency unlocks growth that ambition alone does not.
